Learner drivers face a much-overhauled practical test as part of an ongoing government drive to improve road safety.

The Department for Transport has released details of the first changes to the UK's practical driving test in ten years.

It could become harder to get a licence for a first car and possible first car loan as modular testing is one option, alongside a young person's pre-lessons roads course.

Transport secretary Ruth Kelly said: "Our research shows that we must make sure that learners demonstrate not only good skills, but also safe attitudes."

She added new drivers need a better understanding of driving conditions and added drivers should be encouraged to continue learning practically throughout their motoring lives.

People taking out car insurance for a first car alongside a possible car loan could also get a discount on their cover after completing new post-pass courses as part of the plans.

A star rating system designed to help learner drivers choose instructors is also on the cards.

Car loan customers concerned about road safety could welcome the plans, which officials hope will cut the fatality rate among young drivers.ADNFCR-1366-ID-18585631-ADNFCR
