Motorists who drive illegally and potentially risk incurring Bad Credit have been caught by a successful automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) scheme in North Yorkshire.
The York Press reports that the initiative saw 205 offenders arrested between June 2006 and May 2007, with £1.25 million worth of property also seized.
Building on the success, the scheme is now set to expand to include three new fixed cameras.
Since fixed cameras were introduced, the initiative has seen 351 vehicles recovered, 333 of which were found to be uninsured while 18 were stolen, potentially resulting in bad credit for anyone convicted of the thefts.
A police report about the scheme states: "Through these arrests, the team have supported the strategic aims of reducing crime and anti-social behaviour, bringing offenders to justice and reducing fear of crime and antisocial behaviour."
Government statistics show that between 2005 and 2007, police forces across the country received £32.5 million to establish ANPR projects.
