Drivers in the UK are failing to carry out basic checks on their vehicles, leaving them open to huge expenses during the recession, it has been claimed.
According to research from car care specialist Comma, as many as five million motorists are in danger of incurring huge costs because they do not carry out checks such as measuring oil levels on a regular basis.
Failure to carry out such simple measures means cars are more likely to suffer damage or break down, particularly older models such as used cars.
"With the very real threat of an average £1,413 engine repair bill, motorists' laziness is costing British motorists up to £300 million a year," the organisation has claimed.
Mike Bewsey, sales and marketing director at Comma, added: "When we're all watching the pennies, it's daft that we don't take better care of one of the most expensive items we own, and [on] which we rely so much."
Used cars are becoming increasingly popular, figures from the British Car Auctions organisation have shown, as more people look to purchase a cheaper car during the recession rather than splash out on a new model.
