Motorists in greater Manchester are expected to see their journey times improved thanks to new 'intelligent' traffic lights being installed on a busy motorway junction.
Special sensors will monitor congestion levels at junction four on the M56 and adjust the timing of the lights accordingly, helping to prevent the bunching up of traffic.
The lights are already in use on other parts of the motorway network in the North West of England and according to the Highways Agency have been successful in reducing congestion.
"This system is one of the innovative techniques being introduced by the Highways Agency to deal with congestion and journey time reliability by making the best use of our existing capacity," said project manager Sujad Hussain.
Car loan customers in Blackburn are also seeing improvements, this time in terms of road safety, as a result of new traffic light systems.
According to the Blackburn Citizen, lights recently installed on Whitebirk roundabout will make the intersection safer and easier to navigate.
