Latest figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has revealed further falls in the number of new car registrations in March, as the UK recession deepens.
New car registrations fell by 30.5 per cent, the SMMT revealed, as it called on the government to provide greater assistance to the industry.
"The fall in the market shows that government needs to do more to boost confidence," said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive.
He continued: "A scrappage scheme will provide the incentive needed and the evidence is clear that schemes already implemented across Europe do work to increase demand. The UK is the only major European market not to implement a scheme."
However, while the new car market is struggling, the used car sector continues to grow as more people look for a bargain.
Recent figures released by the British Car Auctions (BCA) organisation revealed that the average value of used cars increased again during March, with more demand and a tightening of supply as many people hang on to their existing vehicle rather than trading them in for a new model.
