The number of people applying for secured Car Loans in order to purchase a new vehicle has fallen considerably since last year, figures suggest.
According to data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers (SMMT), new car registrations fell to 103,333 in November.
This represents a 36.8 per cent fall on last year's figures and SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt conceded that it had been "another difficult month" for the motor industry.
Commenting on the results, director of the Retail Motor Industry National Franchised Dealers Association Sue Robinson said some consumers may have been putting off buying until after the recent VAT reduction took effect.
Others would be waiting for the economy to stabilise and for Car Finance to become more readily available, she suggested.
The electric car market is also struggling, research suggests, with figures released by CleanGreenCars showing that the number of sales has more than halved this year compared to 2007.
