Scrappage scheme 'must benefit new and used car markets'

Apr 6 2009

Plans to launch a government-funded scrappage scheme to help boost the car industry must help both the new and used car sectors, one group has warned.

According to the Association of Car Fleet Operators (ACFO), any scrappage scheme "should incentivise the purchase of vehicles up to four-years-old powered by engines that meet Euro4 emission standards".

ACFO chairman Julie Jenner said: "ACFO is broadly supportive of a scrappage scheme."

However, she warned that unless greater efforts were made by the government to include a greater proportion of the UK's older and used cars into the scheme, few people would be minded to trade in their older vehicle for a new model.

She also hinted that current planned levels of investment in the programme by the government are not enough because the costs of buying a new car will not be offset by the government funding.

The government has recently announced plans to introduce a scrappage scheme to boost the new and used car markets, but it will not come into force for several years.

Car manufacturer CITROEN recently launched its own scrappage scheme, claiming that waiting for the government's initiative would cost motorists and the industry considerably.
