Drivers who have used a car loan or Car Finance to purchase a vehicle and are worried about the impact of the planned vehicle excise duty (VED) changes may be interested to hear of the latest research from ACEA.
The ACEA, or European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, has said that 14 EU member states now have some form of CO2 tax for passenger cars, with a number of them introducing legislation over the past 15 months.
France, Spain, Finland, Ireland, the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark and Portugal are among those countries where a tax on CO2 emitting cars is in force.
Ivan Hodac, secretary general of the ACEA, suggested the taxes serve to encourage those buying a car - whether through car finance or otherwise - to choose a more environmentally-friendly vehicle.
"CO2 related taxation of cars and of alternative fuels are an important tool in shaping consumer demand towards fuel-efficient cars," Mr Hodac said.
New VED bands are to be introduced from April 1st 2009 that will see certain high-polluting vehicles pay more tax than they currently do.
