VOLVO has received a new traffic safety award at the annual World Traffic Safety Symposium in New York for technology that helps drivers to avoid low-speed collisions.

The Traffic Safety Achievement Award was judged by a panel of experts comprising traffic safety specialists from institutions such as the Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at the 2008 World Traffic Safety Symposium, held at the New York International Auto Show.

Volvo Cars' in-house development team created the new City Safety technology, which can prevent or reduce the severity of collisions at low speeds, cutting the risk of personal injury or damage to vehicles for Car Loans customers.

Jonas Ekmark, head of preventive safety at the Volvo Cars Safety Centre, said: "City Safety is yet another example of Volvo's aim to utilise real world traffic situations to develop solutions to prevent accidents. It is extremely gratifying that we are now being acknowledged with this prestigious award."

The first car to be fitted with the City Safety system will be the Volvo XC60 and the technology will notice when the vehicle in front brakes suddenly, braking automatically if the driver does not take action.

An estimated three-quarters of all collisions occur at speeds of less than 30 km/h (18 mph), with drivers failing to brake before around half of the collisions, often as a result of insufficient concentration.

Established in 1927, Volvo Car Corporation is committed to safety and is currently owned by the FORD Motor Company as part of the Premier Automotive Group.ADNFCR-1366-ID-18530163-ADNFCR
