Used car buyers looking to cut costs

Mar 12 2009

More than 40 per cent of used cars buyers are looking to save money on motoring, a study has shown.

According to findings from Exchange and Mart, 43 per cent of people who buy used cars would like to invest in a model that could generate fuel savings and lower tax costs.

Almost 20 per cent of people questioned said they are looking for a car that is cheaper to run, while 15 per cent are planning to invest in a car that is cheaper to buy.

"The cost of fuel and new vehicle excise duty has made a big impact on buying habits with a whopping 43 per cent saying their next car will have to have better fuel economy and a lower tax band," commented Debra Healy, digital director of Exchange and Mart.

Last year, the firm found that more people than ever were looking to buy a used car privately rather than from a dealership, which could present problems for the industry as dealers are already facing tough trading conditions.
