Japanese car manufacturer Nissan is to develop a new hatchback at its UK factory, generating over 1,000 new jobs at the plant and at parts manufacturers.
The new mid-sized car will be produced in Sunderland from 2014, thereby creating an extra 225 job opportunities at the plant itself and another 900 at part suppliers selling to Nissan.
The decision comes after a statement a month ago that the North East factory will also manufacture a small car based on the Invitation concept model that will be released next year.
The two new designs will collectively result in a total of about 3,000 jobs being generated in the country's motoring industry within the next two years – 625 of which will be at Nissan and the rest throughout the supply base.
As soon as recruitment for the two models has been finalised, Sunderland plant's labour force will amount to a record 6,225, boosting yearly production to more than half a million vehicles.
Nissan stated that the new hatchback, which will be given its name nearer to its marketing launch, signifies the car manufacturer's return to the popular mid-sized market segment in Europe and will play an important role in the company's continuing growth.
The statement was issued by Nissan Chief Operating Officer Toshiyuki Shiga and Prime Minister David Cameron during a visit by the latter to Nissan's Yokohama headquarters in Japan.
Close to 80,000 of the latest hatchback model will be produced yearly, creating the need for the Sunderland factory to introduce an extra shift.
