Car finance customers to get new Nissan line

Japanese car maker NISSAN has revealed it is to build and produce a new car in Britain for the UK's car loan customers.

The firm revealed it is to source an all-new compact car from its plant in Sunderland starting in 2010, although no exact date when it will be available to Car Finance customers has been released.

Nissan said the new model will build on the success of the Nissan Qashqai and will re-enforce Sunderland's role as a centre of manufacturing.

President of Nissan Carlos Ghosn said: "By delivering on tough commitments, our employees at Sunderland have demonstrated our plant can be a globally competitive centre for the production of high-value products."

The company said the model line will feature a new A platform that will be used for at least three models, including the next generation of Micra.

Sunderland produced a record 374,000 vehicles in the 2007 financial year, with the plant currently employing around 4,700 people.

Nissan also produces the Note car model and also builds the Navara and Pathfinder 4x4 vehicles.
