Japanese car manufacturer Nissan has started doing road tests on its new electric van, which is based on the popular NV200 compact commercial.
The company is well known for the popularity of its first electric vehicle, the Leaf, among many car loan buyers. The new van is currently being tested by the Japanese postal services.
The test vehicle will be used for normal day-to-day postal delivery and collection tasks for about two months in the Japanese city of Yokohama to evaluate its performance in a real-life situation. Afterwards the tests will be repeated in Europe with different companies.
The regular NV200 has been on sale in Europe since 2009. The van was in the news recently when it was chosen as the next generation New York taxi. The experience the company gained in the manufacture of the Leaf has been put to good use in the development of the new electric NV200.
Hideto Murakami, Corporate Vice President in charge of Global LCV Business at Nissan, said “We will certainly reflect the customer feedback gained from these proving tests in our future product development.”
He expressed the view that zero emission vehicles could play a huge role in balancing the demands of economic growth and environmental protection and said that the electric NV200 would make a significant contribution to developing a sustainable society while also contributing to customers’ businesses.
It is Nissan’s aim to become a world leader in the field of electric vehicle technology. The alliance between Renault and Nissan has already signed agreements with 90 corporations, national and local governments around the world.
