Despite sluggish sales of electric cars both in the UK and Europe, major car manufacturers have clearly committed themselves to producing “greener” cars in future. At this stage the majority of both cash and car loan buyers do not seem to be willing to pay a premium for an electric vehicle though, making life difficult for carmakers that have to invest significant amounts of money in the new technology.
In the latest news on this front it has now become know that PSA PEUGEOT CITROEN and BMW will cooperate in the production of hybrid car components. It has been more than a year since they first signed a memorandum of agreement, but the new company, BMW Peugeot Citroen Electrification has only now become a reality.
The joint venture will comprise of the production of components for the electrification of both companies’ cars from 2015. The aim is to make BMW Peugeot Citroen Electrification one of the world’s leader manufacturers in the electric power train field within a couple of years.
PSA and BMW are jointly investing over €100million in the new project, which will create jobs for about 400 people at the new Research and Development Centre located in the German city of Munich. A factory producing hybrid components will also be established in Mulhouse, France. This facility will employ around 250 workers.
The following components will be manufactured at the new plant: generators, high-voltage batteries, loading units, electric motors, energy management software and power electronics.
