The Peugeot HYbrid 4 3008 might never win a beauty competition. It is, however, a roomy vehicle with lots of headroom. It has an exceptionally tiny roadprint, something which responsible city dwellers would probably love.
It also has a massive boot with double shelves and a divided tailgate, which facilitates loading and provides you with somewhere to sit when you are out in the countryside putting on your hiking boots. The inside of the car is luxurious and only top quality materials have been used.
There is also a long list of nice accessories. Here we are talking about things such as a head-up windscreen display, a full-length glass roof (great for bird watchers) and even a gigantic refrigerated storage bin strategically placed between the front seats.
All of this no doubt contributed to the fact that the 3008 won the 2010 Which Car? award of the year. Since then life has moved on at the company and the 2012 model can add one more personality to the list: technical whiz kid.
Officially the 3008 is the first-ever 100% diesel-electric hybrid vehicle. This might not put it in the same league as a Rolls Royce or a Porsche as far as status value is concerned, but in terms of the way our cars are powered, it signifies a new and exhilarating chapter in automotive history.
Unfortunately, while according to official tests the HYbrid4 is capable of an impressive 70.5mpg, tests carried out by the Guardian show that it could only manage 45mpg. A couple of years ago that might have been exceptional; nowadays, from a “green” car, that is pretty average.
