The wider availability of cars which produce no CO2 could be a step closer after a new fuel cell was developed.

Intelligent Energy and PSA PEUGEOT CITROEN have unveiled a vehicle powered by an electric battery with a hydrogen fuel cell meaning its charge will go further.

The development could be of interest to Car Finance customers looking for a greener vehicle and is the result of three years' work by the partnership.

Chief executive officer of Intelligent Energy Henri Winand said: 'We have made the fuel cell system robust and compact enough for real-world clean motoring.'

Experts have managed to get a test Peugeot van with the fuel cell to travel around 300km with the technology.

It is small enough to fit under a bonnet on a small delivery vehicle and can be started at low winter temperatures.

Developers hope the range of the vehicle, three times the distance covered by other electric models, could be a decisive landmark.

The increased distance of the test model brings widely-available zero-emission vehicles a step closer, which could be the ultimate purchase for green-minded car finance customers.

London-based Intelligent Energy specialises in producing technology which could replace combustion engines.
