New research carried out by Warranty Direct found that the Peugeot 207 is the most reliable used car to drive. According to the company's research, only one out of every 17 Peugeot 207s (6%) will break down during any given year.
Second on the list came the Fiat Panda, with only 14% of UK car credit owners experiencing major mechanical problems during the average year.
In third place we find another Peugeot - the 205 CC. Not only is this a very reliable car to drive, but in the unlikely event of it breaking down, it will on average only cost £185 to get it up and running again.
During the research project, Warranty Direct studied more than 20 000 insurance policies for European cars that were aged between three and seven years. To calculate their overall running cost and reliability, factors such as the breakdown rate, average mileage, the age of the car and repair costs were taken into account.
According to Warranty Direct spokesperson Duncan McClure Fisher, some UK car credit buyers might be surprised to see Peugeot and Fiat in the first ten. He continued "But the data doesn't lie - these cars are very dependable - It's perhaps less surprising to see a couple of VWs in the top 10."
Something that might surprise many UK car credit buyers is the fact that two of the five least reliable vehicles were the Mercedes SL and the Mercedes S Class. The BMW 7 series also has the dubious honour of appearing in the bottom five.
