The electric car market is evolving at such a rapid speed that hardly a week goes by without another manufacturer coming forward with a new, improved product. Most car buyers in the UK have to buy their cars on finance. Three of their biggest concerns at this stage are the replacement cost of the battery, the range of the car and the trade-in value after a couple of years.
The days when the electric car was thought of as a slow, underpowered vehicle, only suitable for use about town is long gone. Some electric cars of today boast performance comparable to expensive sports cars.
This has been underlined when Peugeot's electric car recently set a new record at Nuburgring. Not satisfied with already breaking the straight-line speed record for electric cars, the EX1 proceeded to set a new lap record (also for electric cars) at the same course.
The Peugeot maintained an average speed of 85 miles per hour and completed the lap in nine minutes and one second. It is still not quite up there with the petrol driven super-cars though. The lap record for a Porsche 911 GTS RS stands at 7:18 and for a Vauxhall Corsa VXR it is 8:54.
Peugeot built the EX1 as part of the company's 200th anniversary celebrations. It is fitted with two electric engines - one per axle - with a combined power output of 340 bhp.
If you plan to buy one of these cars on finance, you will probably have to wait a long time. For now it is strictly a concept model.
