First Renault Kangoo Enters Series Production

Sep 14 2011 First Renault Kangoo Enters Series Production Image

Renault seems to be very serious about their electric car division.  The company has no less than four different electric models in the pipeline.  The first of these, the Renault Kangoo Z.E., will enter series production within the next few days.  The CEO of Renault-Nissan, Carlos Ghosn, and the French Minister for Energy, Industry and the Digital Economy, Eric Besson, will be present when the car leaves the production line at the groups’ Maubeuge production facility in France.

The Kangoo Z.E. was, of course, derived from the company’s Kangoo light delivery vehicle.  It will first appear on British showroom floors in November.  Prepare yourself for a car loan of about £17,000 and battery hire fees of about £60 per month over three years.

Carlos Ghosn announced at the same time that the company plans to hire an additional 100 workers at their Maubeuge plant to work in the Kangoo Z.E. production plant.

The first Kangoo Z.E. rolled off the Maubeuge production line nearly a year ago – on the 22nd September last year.  Since then the company has produced 68 of these cars in 2010 and 281 so far in 2011 (to the 31st July).  These were pre-production models destined for pilot electric vehicle projects both in France and overseas, such as the Seine Aval Vehicle Electrique programme.

As part of Renault’s alliance with Nissan, the company will start producing three more electric cars before the end of next year: the Twizy Z.E., the ZOE Z.E. and the Fluence Z.E.
