French car manufacturer Renault has announced that they have developed a brand new diesel engine that delivers 20% better fuel consumption than its forerunner.
The new engine has been developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance. It will be the first in the new ìEnergyî range of engines that is going to replace the existing 1.9 dCi 130 engine. The company claims that both fuel consumption and CO2 figures have been reduced by 20% to 52.3 miles per gallon and 117g/km respectively.
Car credit buyers have nothing to fear though - the changes do not turn the new engine into a sluggard. Power output is still an impressive 130bhp and it develops a more than acceptable 320Nm of torque.
The new engine features a host of technologies to reduce CO2 emissions. This includes an innovative new low-pressure EGR loop and a stop-start system with regenerative braking. Power demand for the oil pump has been reduced by fitting a variable displacement pump and the air/fuel mixed is optimised using variable swirl control.
Car credit buyers will in fact be amazed to hear that no less than 75% of the engine has been redeveloped and consists of brand new parts using highly advanced technology. The new dCi 130 engine has also specifically been developed in such a way that it can be upgraded as times goes by. Making it compatible with Euro 6 standards should, therefore, not be much of a problem.
Renault expects the new engine to account for about 30% of the plantís total production from next year onwards.
