We do not hear a lot of good news from the UK car manufacturing industry nowadays, so any piece of good news will most likely go down well with the motoring public.
Toyota, for one, has shown confidence in the future prospects of the UK car industry by investing £100 million in its factory in Burnaston, Derbyshire. The factory will be involved in the production of the new generation Toyota Auris, including diesel, petrol and hybrid models.
The manufacture of the new C-segment Auris will significantly increase the plant’s production volumes and it will create 1,500 new jobs over the next two years.
The news of Toyota’s new investment and job creation project has elicited positive comments from Prime Minister David Cameron.
He said “Toyota’s commitment to the UK shows the growing strength of the UK car industry — it is our great British success story.”
Mr Cameron added that the investment project combined with the new jobs being created will strengthen not only the economy of Derbyshire but that of the whole United Kingdom. He called it a tribute to the professionalism, hard work and skill of the UK workers at the Toyota plant.
He went on to say that the only way forward for Britain was to build an economy that was based on innovation, manufacturing and exports. The motor car industry, he said, was leading the way in aiding the county to achieve this.
Nearly 85% of the engines and vehicles produced at Burnaston are exported to countries in Europe and other international destinations.
