The motoring press has published spy pictures of the new Volkswagen Golf clearly showing that everything is on target for the release of the new version in 2012.
The car was heavily disguised, so it’s not possible to get a clear picture of what it will look like from the outside, but under the bonnet dramatic changes have taken place.
The car was seen near Volkswagen’s headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany. According to inside sources, the new Golf’s platform underwent a complete redesign.
The wheelbase is now much longer and Volkswagen has introduced a new platform, which they refer to as MQB. This provides for a much more versatile arrangement than the chassis used in the previous Mk VI Golf.
The company plans to use the new platform for a whole new range of cars in future, including the Scirocco, Golf Plus and Touran.
The range of engines will be extensive. There will be turbocharged and supercharged TSI engines, including a fuel-efficient 1.2-litre pushing out 65bhp and delivering 60 miles to the gallon. The two-litre engine will deliver 300bhp.
Interested auto loan buyers will be able to choose from two diesel engines as well: a 1.6 litre and a 2 litre TDI.
Entry level models will have front wheel drive and a six-speed gearbox, while the more powerful models will be available in four-wheel drive with the option of Volkswagen’s semi-automatic seven-speed DSG gearbox.
Eco-conscious drivers will be happy to hear that the company also plans a 100mpg hybrid car and a fully electric version that will be called e_Bluemotion.
