Those of us who have to use car finance to fund our wheels all have one thing in common: there's a limit to what we can afford. So if it just so happens that the car of your dreams is ever so slightly beyond you reach, it means you will either have to go without it or start saving for a substantial deposit.
This will certainly be the case for the new Volkswagen Beetle. Many of us have been waiting to hear what it will cost and the price tag of £16,490 for the cheapest model that has just been announced by Volkswagen might be tad too expensive for many motorists - especially in the current economic climate.
For that price you only get a 1.2-litre TSI engine, even though it pushes out a fairly impressive 104bhp. It will be mated with the 7-speed DSG gearbox for now, but a manual version will be added next year. If you can afford it, there's also the option of a 1.4-litre engine producing 157bhp; this one has a 6-speed manual gearbox.
The top of the range will be taken up by a Sport model, which will be fitted with a 1.4-litre TSI engine. It carries a price tag of £21,220.
Even the entry range model will have a CD player, air-con, central locking and a DAB radio. If you can afford it, there's a host of optional extras, including Bluetooth, 17-inch alloy wheels, colour-coded dashboard trim, a multifunction steering wheel and an iPod.
The top-of-the-range Sport model will get cruise control, 18-inch alloy wheels, sports seats and parking sensors.
