VOLKSWAGEN has announced the launch of the new Golf GTI, 36 years after its engineers began working on the prototype for the iconic vehicle.
"The very latest evolution and sixth generation of the original hot hatch has been released for ordering," the company has announced.
Volkswagen added that the original concept behind the GTI had been maintained in the latest version, complete with "sharp dynamics, a responsive four-cylinder engine and driver involvement".
The latest incarnation has an increased power output and its maximum speed has been boosted to 149 mph, with a 0-60mph of just 6.9 seconds.
However, improved environmental technology means that despite the increase in power emissions fall from 189 gallons per kilometre (g/km) to 170 g/km.
The Golf was recently awarded a maximum five-star rating by the Euro NCAP crash testing agency. It was given the highest overall rating of any vehicle tested under the new standards.
The arrival of the new Golf GTI could encourage more people to buy a used car in one of the older incarnations of the model, particularly given its good safety standards.
