The number of car finance buyers who want green cars is climbing every year. Volkswagen seems to have realised this – the company recently announced revolutionary changes to its range of products by introducing a series of plug-in vehicles that will go into production during 2013/14.
The announcement was made by Professor Dr Martin Winterkorn, the Chairman of Volkswagen. He was delivering a speech at the Vienna Motor Symposium. Dr Winterkom said that hybrid models had great potential for the medium term. They delivered the best a petrol or diesel engine could deliver with much lower rates of CO2 emissions. He added that a hybrid car had no limitations as far as climbing ability, towing or speed was concerned.
Volkswagen also used the opportunity to announce two new engines: a 2 litre TDI and a 1.4 litre TSI E85.
When used in the Volkswagen Passat, the new TSI engine is combined with a seven-speed double clutch transmission. In E85 mode it boasts fuel consumption as low as 8.8 litre per 100km / 62 miles. CO2 emission levels are also quite respectable at 144 g/km. Compared to an engine that uses super petrol fuel this represents a 7% drop in CO2 emission levels.
Car finance buyers in the USA wishing to buy this vehicle will now have access to the 2-litre TDI engine, which has been specially modified for American market preferences. The engine delivers 320Nm and can accelerate the car from 0-60 miles an hour in 9.3 seconds. The top speed is 113 miles an hour and the car boasts fuel economy of 35 miles per gallon.
