Overview

"Best of most worlds"

Exterior and Interior

With a leather interior after a good conditioning she stands out nicely, the dash is slightly basic and outdated but if you have the leather then it balances itself out. The exterior is sporty and although not the most powerful Astra is nice enough to drive through the city without worrying what people are thinking. Although the wheel arches are prone to rusting with careful maintenance and excellent polishing she gleams like a sports car.

Performance and Economy

At times you can forget you are driving a non turbo car if you hit the pedal at the right times but unfortunately without a custom remap there is a lot of dead spots that can kill the fun.. Once you work out where they are she hits the spot just enough to not make you want to exchange for a 2 litre turbo. Fuel usage is mostly governed by what you are doing, short runs tend to drink a lot but if you drive steadily half a tank can get you to work (Mine is a 44 mile return trip to and from work) as I have learned, but only if you don't break 60mph - including on the 70 zones!

Like to Drive

She is a nice drive but unfortunately with most Vauxhall's a little under-steer is present. The drive sound is a little loud but the audio system can counter that. As mentioned there is a few dead spots on acceleration but the comfy leather bucket like seat makes the ride enjoyable. <

Faults and Repairs

My personal experience of repairs involved a complete new engine as 2 days after I purchased the car the timing belt snapped (the car was not supplied or financed by Creditplus). Other than that all parts on the car apart from break pads are still the original which is a bonus. Not sure how long the luck will last though.

Overview

"Vauxhall Astra Coupe Turbo "

Exterior and Interior

The interior is identical to that of the hatchback, estate, and van. With certain models, the nicer looking leather interior is often found, this is certainly not as comfortable as the cloth interior though. The steering wheel on the Turbo models is noticeably more sporty. Exterior wise, the Coupe Turbo is more or less identical to that of the 1.6, 1.8, and 2.2 Coupe variants. A common upgrade is to install the 'GSI Hatchback' bumper.

Performance and Economy

In standard form, this car offer a very good mix of economy and performance. With nigh on 200bhp as standard, you will easily achieve MPG's of mid to high 30's. Very very good engine to fettle with and improve. My example was fitted with a Stage 2 remap, full exhaust system, Forge dump valve, and front mounted intercooler, and was in the regions of about 260 - 280Bhp. Even with this higher power figure, I was achieving over 35Mpg on average.

Like to Drive

Fantastic in a straight line. Not as good in the corners as some of its rivals, but this is natural due to it being a big car, with Front Wheel Drive and a lot of power. This is more commonly noticed in the later Astra VXR. <

Faults and Repairs

As long as its serviced correctly, and warmed up properly before driving 'spiritedly' this engine should last a long long time. Be wary of modified examples with little or no service history. A common fault is for the turbo seals to go, causing very little power, and a lot of smoke on start up.
