What better way can there be to beat the current economic downturn than a budget car? However cheap cars are not that easy to find. Most cash-strapped consumers will, therefore, welcome the decision by budget brand Dacia to enter the UK market.
The company plans to start selling their first models here in January 2013. UK customers will get the benefit of slightly more upscale models than the ones the company is selling in the rest of Europe.
The focus will remain on value for money though. Dacia will try to duplicate its success in the German market, where it currently has a 3% market share.
The first two models that will be sold in the UK are the Sandero and the Duster. They will be assembled in Chennai, India ± alongside a number of other models that are solely meant for the Indian market.
In case you are not aware of this: Dacias parent company is of course Renault ± which is why the cars are sold under that name in India. The UK models will get different bumpers and headlights and a higher quality interior.
The company is not planning to set up a dealer network in the UK at this stage. The cars will be sold and serviced by existing Renault franchises, although this could change if demand warrants it.
Expect prices to be at the bottom end of the market ± even lower than Kia, Hyundai and Chevrolet.
