Ford has launched a new version of the Focus specially developed for the UK market. The car will be called the Zetec-S.
This is to an extent an acknowledgement that Ford's approach to market only "global" cars, a sort of suits-one suits all policy, does not always work the way the company wishes. Occasionally it has to make a concession to local tastes - and the Zetec-S is an example of this.
The Zetec-S is aimed at buyers that are looking for something sportier and with higher equipment levels than the standard Zetec model. The S will come with 17-inch alloy wheels, a body styling kit and sporty suspension that is significantly stiffer than that found on the standard model. The optional equipment includes a Zetec-S Interior Park, which includes a powered driver's seat, part-leather seats and other trim items.
The new model will be available with a wide choice of petrol and diesel engines. The most notable engine is no doubt the 1.6-litre EcoBoost with a power output of 180bhp. Buyers who really want something fast and furious will have to wait for the ST-Ipetrol.
Prepare yourself for a price tag in the region of £18,745 for the 1.6-litre 125bhp model. Diesels will start at £19,845 (for the 1.6-litre TDCI) - which is more than £1,200 more expensive than the standard Zetec.
If all this sounds rather enticing, but simply beyond your budget, Ford has introduced a new entry-level Focus called the Studio. The 1.6-litre car sells for £13,995 and develops 85bhp.
