Silverstone is, of course, the home of motor racing in the UK. It has now also become the location to become part of the electric car revolution by gaining its first recharging station.
Silverstone, in partnership with Arup - an infrastructure specialist company - has set up two highly advanced electric vehicle charging points. One is located in the public parking area next to the main circuit entrance and the other one is in front of its new innovation centre. This will allow both business visitors and race-goers to quickly recharge the electric car batteries. The best of all is that the service is free of charge.
At the opening ceremony Richard Phillips, the MD of Silverstone Circuits, said "This is one of the first steps in our plan to become a focal point for showcasing EVs and educating the public about the capabilities of electric cars."
He added that the recharging points would enable racing fans within a 60 mile radius of the race course to attend all the top events without fear of running out of power. If the concept proves successful, they plan to install additional points.
Each of the points allow for two cars to be recharged at the same time. This will make it possible for electric vehicle drivers from cities as far away as Milton Keynes, Birmingham, North London and Oxford to attend races such as the Le Mans, Grand Prix and Moto GP without having to hunt for a recharging station on the way.
