Smaller Cheaper Mercedes SLS on the Way

Finally there is good news for those who always wanted to own a Mercedes SLS. Mercedes plans to bring out a cheaper, smaller version of the SLS super-car. It will compete directly with the Jaguar C-X16 and the Porsche 911.

In an interview with Auto Express the development director of AMGs performance division, Cristoph Jung, said ¬There is room for an AMG model below the SLS, targeting the Porsche 911. This is the next market for AMG, and we are considering what is the right package.®

According to Jung, the new model was developed after the remarkable success the company achieved with the gullwing-doored SLS. The company has sold more than 5,000 of these cars since 2009 ± not bad, considering the price tag of £168,000. The new model, he says, will firmly establish AMG as a sports car developer.

He emphasised the importance of growing the brand and referred to Porsche in this regard, whom he said has developed the Porsche 911 into a huge success.

The new car is still in its early development stages, so Jung did not reveal much detail at this stage. What he did say was that the new SLS will be a two-seater, powered by a V8 engine mounted in the front of the car.

He hinted at a price tag of around 80,000 euros (£70,000) and said that a coupe was definitely on the cards, with a roadster being a strong possibility.
