The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has published the shortlist for its much coveted Innovation Award.
Every one of the candidates on the shortlist has been responsible for developing some or other solution that makes motoring either more environmentally friendly or safer.
The final candidates are:
* WABCO Holdings - The WABCO TailGuard.
* Jaguar Land Rover - The Range e.
* Intelligent Energy - The Suzuki Burgman Fuel Cell Scooter.
* Flybrid Systems LLP - The CFT KERS.
* ABB Product Group - The Terra 100.2 duel post plus base station.
* Ashwoods Automotive - The Hybrid Drive System.
GKN Driveline sponsored the award, which received entries from a wide spectrum of automotive companies, including commercial vehicles, cars, aftermarket and components.
Paul Everitt, the Chief Executive of the SMMIT, said "I am delighted that UK automotive has again demonstrated it is world-class in the fields of product development and design and I look forward to judging the winner of this year's Award."
He added that this year's award attracted top calibre entries that reflected the strength of the UK motoring sector and the benefits of investing in new technologies and products.
Those on the shortlist will now go on to the competition's final stage where they will have to face a "Dragon's Den" panel consisting of leaders from the UK automotive industry. The winner will be announced on the 22nd November at a dinner function to be held at the London Hilton in Park Lane.
