Firms gain stars for safety

Car safety is the priority for any manufacturer. With more and more technical innovations every passing year, car producers are at the forefront of efforts to make the driving experience as safe as state of the art technology allows.

Ford is leading the way with six Euro NCAP Advanced rewards for its work on MyKey on the new Fiesta and SYNC with Emergency Assistance on new B-MAX, Fiesta, C-MAX, the Focus and the brand new Kuga.

The auto giant also received the maximum five-star safety ratings for the Kuga and Fiesta models after crash testing. Andrew Johnson, the supervisor of automotive safety at Ford of Europe, said MyKey and SYNC with Emergency Assistance were not just new technologies for Ford in Europe, but were technologies never seen before in small cars.

The MyKey technology on the new Fiesta allows restrictions to be placed on young drivers by parents, such as restricting the top speed and placing a block on volume in the audio system. On top of this, the system will let drivers know about low fuel, as well as ensuring safety measures including Active City Stop and the Electronic Stability Control is always activated. If any of the driver or front seat passengers fail to wear their seatbelts, the audio system is muted.

If an accident should take place, the SYNC with Emergency Assistance system will help people inside the B-MAX to call emergency services operators in 26 languages, spoken in 40 European regions. It uses data from the GPS unit stationed on-board the car, allowing the emergency services to get an exact fix on locations and using Bluetooth to connect. The Fiesta, C-MAX, Focus and Kuga all have the same technology.

The Euro NCAP has also awarded 5 safety stars to the new Range Rover - the highest achievable in Europe.

John Edwards, Land Rover global brand director, said it was the second vehicle launched in as many years to reach the safety standard, with Range Rover Evoque achieving the same result in 2011.

The all-new Range Rover also achieved one of the highest ever scores for pedestrian safety within its vehicle category.
