Green Car of the Year title to BMW

What Car? has named the BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics Auto the Green Car of the Year for its "real world" 56mpg fuel consumption and its low tax rating with 110g/km CO2.

The BMW earned the award because it "delivers great environmental credentials without compromise, which is what consumers really want", What Car? said.

In other awards announcements, for the second year running, the Mini Cooper D won Best Green Fun Car, while the Ford Mondeo took the prize as Best Green Family Car, and the Toyota Prius + was named Best Green MPV.

The Skoda Citigo was awarded Best Green Supermini and Mazda's new CX-5 2.2D Skyactive-D 150 SE-L won Best Green SUV.

The prize for Best Alternative-Fuel Car went to the Chevrolet Volt because of its 235.4mpg and only 27g/km of CO2 in tailpipe emissions.

In rating the automobiles, the What Car? judges took into account all gases that each car emits, in addition to driveability, reliability and costs over the life of the car.
