Hyundai has been rewarded with a slot on the Car of the Year 2013 shortlist for the first time, for its New Generation i30 model.
The contest is regarded as Europe's top award for new cars and is judged by 58 jury members from 22 European countries.
In the final round of judging they ascertain the winner and the Hyundai was one of the top scorers in the first round.
Senior vice president and COO of Hyundai Motor Europe, Allan Rushforth said the New Generation i30 was designed, developed and is made in Europe, for Europeans, so it's a great honour for such a respected group of experts to recognise its relevance to Europe by shortlisting it for Car of the Year 2013.
He said the car's "dynamic design and great value package" are changing the way European consumers think about Hyundai. And his claims are borne out not only by independent research but also by sustained sales success in the highly-competitive C-segment.
The i30 has had an impressive year and has topped Hyundai's sales in Europe. Since the first generation model went on sale in 2007 over 500,000 have been sold within Europe and over a million throughout the world.
Of these cars over half a million have been produced in Nosovice in the Czech Republic, at Hyundai's award-winning factory. The company has recently expanded the New Generation i30 family with a three-door edition. This will add to the specifications of the Tourer and five-door model.
The other cars in contention for the Car of the Year award are the Ford B-Max, Mercedes A-class, Peugeot 208, Renault Clio, Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT-86 (as one candidate), Volkswagen Golf and Volvo V40.
The winner will be announced on March 4th before the opening of the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. This will be the 50th time that the competition has taken place.
The i30 is just like all Hyundai models launched in Europe in that it comes complete with a Five-Year Triple Care Package. This enables customers to have a five-year vehicle health check, five years of roadside assistance and a five-year warranty, with no limit on the mileage.
