New Kia scoops another Total 4x4 award

The new Kia Sorento has been awarded Total 4x4 magazine's "Most Improved" contender gong for 2012, but it just missed out on a third victory in the top award for the "Full-Size" category to the all-new Range Rover.

September saw the UK and European launch of the new Kia model with a list of improvements. These included a new platform, revised engines, enhanced interior quality and a more sophisticated, modern look.

Despite winning the magazine's top honour twice previously, and beating a whole range of premium opposition in the process, the Sorento took second place this year, and editor Alan Kidd commented that "nothing less" than the all-new Range Rover could prevent a hat-trick of class wins, which speaks volumes for how far Kia has come as a world-class 4x4 manufacturer.

Kidd added that the Sorento was already one of the best 4x4s on the market, but this year's upgrades moved it closer than ever to becoming a premium SUV itself. Critically, Kidd acknowledged that the few criticisms they had of the old model, have all been addressed by the new one.

Responding to the award, Paul Philpott, resident and CEO of Kia Motors (UK) Limited, reminded people how the Sorento had won friends and plaudits throughout its history, even before the new improvements. He confessed magnanimously, that he didn't even mind that the vehicle lost out in the top class award to "something as remarkable as the highly-praised" new Range Rover, because that demonstrated how highly-valued their own vehicle was.

Philpott did, however, announce that Kia intended to win the crown back, through a commitment to developing, designing and producing "real cars for real people", an ethos he claims is unquestioned.

The Sorento has a choice of manual or automatic transmissions and seven seats as standard. The range comes only with a 2.2 litre turbo-diesel engine and a host of green emission-reducing and fuel-stretching features.

Pricing starts at £26,495 with car finance available, and Kia's industry-leading and fully transferable seven year warranty comes as standard. In addition, for just £379, owners can fix their running costs with three years servicing and MOT.
