Plans to skip '13' number plate

Superstitious drivers may be able to avoid their new cars featuring the number 13 on registration plates from next March.

The DVLA proposals would allow new cars registered between March 1, 2013 and August 31 the same year to sport a 62-plate, therefore avoiding having to display the unlucky number 13.

This would mean the plates will effectively show the same pattern as those registered from September 1, 2012 to February 28, 2013. From September 1 next year it will naturally go back to the normal plate pattern, of a 63 registration.

The Vehicle Remarketing Association said: "This is great for those who regard the number 13 as unlucky but it could cause a challenge for the used-car market.

"Those picking up on the anomaly will value the car correctly, but those who don't may offer drivers considerably less for the car than it is worth just based on the registration plate. Something for the used market to consider in spring next year."
