Third parties blamed for car damage

The main reasons for car owners suffering minor damage to their vehicles include vandalism and the actions of unknown third parties, a survey has found.

More than 100 technicians were consulted in research carried out by Smart repairer Revive and they listed bumper scuffs, alloy wheel repairs, vehicle vandalism and third party damage as the main problems.

High kerbs, tight turns and narrow bays are listed as common causes of parking-related damage, yet Revive was surprised to find that cars fitted with parking sensors tend to suffer more trouble than those without such systems.

Other key findings in the survey include rises in motorists paying for damage to be repaired themselves rather than involving their insurance companies and in those hiring or leasing vehicles choosing to fix alloy or paintwork problems.

"We are seeing people holding onto cars longer than they might have done previously and taking more care of them by tidying them up and to protect residual values," said managing director of Revive, Mark Llewellyn.
