Volkswagen has been ranked as one of the world's most eco-conscious manufacturers and named as one of Interbrand's Best Global Green Brands 2012.
As one of the top ranking companies, Volkswagen has jumped from sixth to fourth place, making it the most eco-friendly German car maker.
Interbrand releases the results of its poll once a year, along with its Best Global Brands Report.
This year Volkswagen upped its green credentials, based on more than 80 driving tests by consultants Deloitte, while motorists' ratings of the usefulness of sustainable features were also taken into account.
Luca de Meo, head of group marketing and head of marketing at Volkswagen Passenger Cars, welcomed the results. He said: "The improvement compared with the previous year shows that we are on the right track.
"We will continue to pool all the environmental sustainability efforts of the brand under the Think Blue umbrella. We are committed to achieving the group objective of becoming the world's most sustainable auto maker by 2018."
