Berlingo Electric makes UK debut at NEC

The ground-breaking Berlingo Electric is being showcased for the first time at the CV Show's Citroën stand at the NEC.

The Berlingo Electric has continued Citroën's tradition of electric LCVs, which started with the very first Berlingo Electrique van in 1998. It will be on display at the show in Birmingham until Thursday.

Scott Michael, Citroën's head of commercial vehicles and business centre programme, said the new Berlingo Electric, which will be available to buy later this year, has been introduced to cater for the transport needs of a number of important specialist sectors.

"Our previous electric LCV experience showed that these specific operations include local authority applications such as meals on wheels, parks departments and many other metropolitan council applications," he said.

"In addition, we expect to see Berlingo Electric demand come from urban-based, private sector businesses, where its ease of driving and silent operation are complemented by availability of public charging points and more favourable parking legislation."

Citroën has also used the CV Show to launch other new LCV products which continue its theme of 'Citroën Vans - Business Class', including the Dispatch HDi 125 L1H1 1200 6-seat Crew Van.

The main attraction, though, is the Berlingo Electric. The vehicle includes up-to-the-minute electric vehicle technology, while its permanent magnet synchronous 49kW electric motor and 22.5kWh lithium ion battery pack offers drivers a range of up to 106 miles with a top speed of 68.75mph.

The power used for the heating and air conditioning systems is called upon when the battery charge drops to 20% of its capability. When the level is as low as 10%, a 'tortoise' light replaces a warning light and all unnecessary temperature systems are switched off to conserve energy.

Motorists keen to get behind the wheel of a Berlingo Electric will be able to do so for £21,300 +VAT, though the full specification and pricing details have yet to be announced.

Mr Michael added: "Citroën is able to offer businesses the widest range of innovative environmental transport solutions thanks to its unique choice of LCV driveline and fuel choices, including petrol, HDi diesel, e-HDi micro-hybrid, bio diesel and full electric."
