Ford Fiesta is still UK's favourite car

The Ford Fiesta was the best selling small car in Europe last year and it maintained its position as the UK's most popular car, latest figures show.

On average, someone in Europe brought a new Ford Fiesta every two minutes in 2012, according to automotive data intelligence provider JATO Dynamics.

Ford sold a total of 953,174 cars in the 30 European markets monitored by Jato last year, 306,405 of which were Fiestas.

According to Ford's own figures it sold more than 1.4 million vehicles in the 51 European markets in which it operates.

In the UK the Ford Fiesta has been the most popular car on the market every year since 2009 and last year was no different with dealers selling 110,000 of the small cars.

To mark the arrival of the latest model, January 24 this year was Fiesta Day for Ford's 530 UK dealers, which saw them running a series of showroom features and attractions to help manage the expected high demand.

As part of Fiesta Day, Ford launched a Facebook app which pair users with their ideal Fiesta and encourages them to submit an idea for the perfect 24 hours in a new Fiesta.

The app analyses the Facebook profile page of the user and then uses the information to match them with their ideal Ford Fiesta specification.

Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe: said "The Fiesta had a fantastic 2012 in the UK, Europe and across the world."

The Fiesta has been a remarkable success story for Ford. Since it first went into production in 1976 the company has sold more than 15 million Fiestas worldwide.

In the last four years alone, Ford has sold 2.1 million Fiestas worldwide, 1.7 million of which were in Europe.

In 2012 the UK was the Fiesta's most successful European market, with 109,250 models sold, and Frozen White was the most popular paint colour across Europe.

The latest Ford Fiesta has been redesigned inside and out and offers the 2012 International Engine of the Year, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine.

For the environmentally conscious, there will be an ECOnetic Technology model powered by a 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine that can achieve 87 g/km CO2.

The new Fiesta also has the option of coming equipped with Ford's MyKey, allowing parents to encourage safer driving and limit their teenager's exposure to risk at the wheel.
