Jagielka gets keys to Vauxhall Ampera

Everton and England defender Phil Jagielka will be setting a good example on the roads, like he does on the pitch, as he cruises around in a state-of-the-art Vauxhall Ampera Electron.

The centre back, who has won 16 international caps, has taken delivery of the cutting-edge extended-range electric vehicle.

In a move that will please Evertonians, Jagielka will also be showing off his club colours in his spare time, with the vehicle in Power Blue.

"I am delighted to be driving a Vauxhall Ampera," Jagielka said. "I am very grateful for all of the help Vauxhall have given me in making this revolutionary vehicle available."

The defender, who joined Everton from Sheffield United, is following the lead of former England and Manchester United right back Gary Neville in selecting the Ampera.

Neville, whose brother Phil is currently club captain at Everton but set to leave the club in the summer, has been behind the wheel of the Ampera for the last nine months.

Jagielka, who is tipped to take the armband full time when Phil Neville leaves the club, has a host of features to enjoy on his new Ampera, including voice activated sat nav, audio/video player and a hard drive device with 30GB music file capacity.

The Premier League star will also be able to travel around with a suitable sound system thanks to the Bose 'Energy Efficient Series' blasting out his tunes.

Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall's chairman and managing director, said he is thrilled to see that Jagielka chose the Ampera.

"It's great news for Vauxhall to pair one of England's most dependable centre backs with our universally-acclaimed extended-range electric vehicle," he said.

The Ampera first arrived in showrooms last year and has a real-world battery range of between 25-50 miles.

After that point a small range-extending generator, powered by a 1.4 litre petrol engine, kicks in to give the vehicle an extra 300-plus miles range.

Unlike other hybrids on the market the wheels on the car are always electrically driven.

The car, which is covered by Vauxhall's industry-leading Lifetime Warranty, is available from £29,995 - including the £5,000 government grant, for the Earth model.

Drivers can pick it up from one of 24 specialist Vauxhall dealers in the UK.

Company car drivers can also get a decent taster for the vehicle using the 3-Day Test Drive programme that allows them to drive it around for a few days and only pay for the electricity and/or fuel used.

Vauxhall, which is the largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles in Britain, celebrates its 110th anniversary this year.

The car-maker, which is headquartered in Luton, Bedfordshire, employs around 4,000 people in Britain and exports more than 75% of its production.
