New Lexus model saves on running costs

The Lexus IS 300h boasts class-leading running costs.

The hybrid flagship of the all-new IS range is offering customers cost-of-ownership perks unmatched by any of its 2.0-litre diesel rivals in the premium saloon sector.

This is due to a mix of low maintenance and running costs and tax benefits and incentives secured by its efficient full hybrid powertrain.

Its Lexus Hybrid Drive powertrain - debuting in an IS saloon - gives not only its trademark quiet and smooth performance, but outstanding fuel economy and low emissions, too.

The IS 300h SE model arrives with official combined cycle stats of 65.7mpg and 99g/km CO2.

The new IS range is being unveiled in the UK in July.

Prices for the IS 300h start at £29,495 for the SE version. So what will customers seeking car finance on this new range or buying outright get for their money?

The model's hybrid system is built to last with low maintenance needs in the form of savings on replacement parts and lower servicing bills.

This is largely achieved by three factors:

- the starter motor and alternator are built into the system, so need no servicing or replacement during the vehicle's lifetime

- it uses a maintenance-free timing chain instead of a timing belt

- it has no clutch.

Lexus hybrids drive with 20% higher tyre pressure to help reduce shoulder wear. The smooth, linear power delivery and the IS's balanced weight distribution also ensure less wear on the front tyre treads.

The IS 300h is expected to provide savings on service, maintenance and repair costs alone of up to £443 over three years, compared to rival 2.0-litre diesel automatic makes from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. The savings reflect the reduced labour time required.

The IS 300h SE will gain from many personal and business tax advantages, including a zero annual road tax charge, because of its sub-100g/km emissions performance.

Low benefit-in-kind company car tax rates mean a 40% taxpayer is likely to spend as much as £923 a year less than the driver of a new Audi A4 2.0 TDI SE Multitronic during the first three years of ownership.

Similarly, companies adding the hybrid Lexus to their fleet will savour the lower road tax, fuel, insurance and service, maintenance and repair costs.
