UK market has shifted towards small cars

UK motorists' tastes are shifting towards small cars, according to a new study.

In 1999 small cars accounted for less than 30% of the UK car market, but by 2009 they made up more than 40% of cars sales, a report by market research company Euromonitor International said.

"Even without the stimulus of a scrappage incentive scheme, consumers continue to switch from lower medium cars to offerings in the supermini and even mini segments," explains Neil King, automotive industry analyst at Euromonitor International.

"Combined, they increased their share of the market again in 2012 - back up to 40%. As vehicles have grown in size, right-sizing is a more appropriate term than down-sizing."

The trend is thought to be linked to changing lifestyles, such as the growth in one and two person households, more women living independently prior to marriage and an increasing younger generation.

Car manufacturers have neem quick to latch on to opportunities to capitalise on this growing automotive market trend.

Small but distinctive cars such as the Citroen DS3, Nissan Juke, Fiat 500 and the Mini are just some of the successful small models in mature markets such as the UK.

For those that do still like larger cars, Audi's TT Coupe and Roadster Black Edition models are now available with a new option pack.

The £700 Amplified Black pack is exclusive to the Black Edition models and comes with a whole host of extra features and, of course, they are all black.

The kit includes a black-finished front lip spoiler, black door mirror housings, a black TT RS-style fixed rear spoiler, black 19-inch 'Rotor' design alloy wheels, a black diffuser insert and black exhaust tailpipes.

However, the paint finish comes in four options, none of which are black.

For the more outrageous motorists there is the Samoa Orange version, which comes with orange interior trim inserts, and for everyone else there is either red, white or grey, with a brushed aluminium interior trim.

The Amplified Black package comes with two different engine options. Either a 2.0-litre TFSI petrol with 208bhp, twinned with front-wheel drive or quattro all-wheel drive, or a 167bhp 2.0-litre TDI, paired with quattro drive only.
