This week sees the three day extravaganza of Crufts, where a huge variety of world class canines will be suited and booted for the event’s 125th anniversary show. With so many furry friends having to make their way to Birmingham’s NEC, there had to be a selection of dog-friendly cars out there. So we did some research.

One paws for thought was this: is considering your dog when purchasing a car really a thing? Yes it is. With approximately 24% of UK households owning a dog – and around £1,900 being spent per year per pooch* – that’s a lot of Fidos that need transporting to maintain a regular fun and healthy lifestyle. So, for all you dog owners out there, here’s our top five canine carriers that will ensure you and your best friend arrive in style.

Mazda CX-5

As a SUV, the Mazda CX-5 is pretty much one of the best vehicles for ferrying your terrier around (or any breed for that matter). Its large boot, bags of front and rear legroom and quiet ride means that both family and furry friends will enjoy space and comfort as standard. And who doesn’t like to see a happy dog?

Skoda Superb (Estate)

We all know that Skoda have come a long way, and the Superb’s performance and build quality is exactly what you as the owner will love. As for your faithful hound, the low-loading boot and range of Fido-focused optional extras will have them enjoying the ride as much as you. One option includes a dog ‘hammock’ for between the front and rear seats, intelligently made from a ‘wet dog smell’ reducing and hard-wearing material.

Peugeot 3008

With its split tailgate system (similar to that of the latest Range Rover, but definitely not as expensive), the Peugeot 3008 is a stylish and more than suitable people and puppy carrier. As well as a roomy boot, it’s also got some tricks up its sleeve depending on what model you opt for. For example, the hybrid option is four-wheel drive, so its peaceful electric-only mode is perfect for ensuring you and your canine comrade get from A to B in a chilled frame of mind.

Subaru Outback

The Outback is a firm favourite with those who want good looks combined with practicality and reliability. For the dog in your life, it’s the perfect transporter with its large boot space and low loader point; so whether it’s a small or large breed, they’ll easily be able to jump into the back with the minimum of fuss. There’s also a range of useful dog-orientated accessories available too, so you know that this Scooby will Doo you proud.

Fiat 500L

The pumped up 500L is one of the best looking MPVs on the market and is super-safety conscious with its 5-star Euro NCAP rating. With its easy steering, supple suspension and the optional extra of a Fiat dog guard that separates the boot and rear passenger seating (while still being able to see into the boot), both you and your canine companion will  be able to travel safely and easily.
