This summer sees life returning back to normal – sort of. After a year of being locked down, it’s time for us to get out and about. That means making up for lost time and once again attending the events that form a key part of our summer calendar. For petrolheads, that means exploring British motorsport once again.
With social distancing measures set to finish sometime in July, more and more events are popping up for the grand reopening. So here are the British motorsport events to add to your calendar this year.
When?: 16th to 18th July
Last year saw Hamilton make history by equalling Michael Schumacher’s record of 7 Formula One Championship titles. Can he go one better and become truly the greatest driver of all time? You’d be a fool to bet against him, so you’ll want to go to the British Grand Prix and see history being made. Verstappen is sure to push him close, and with former champions Vettel, Raikkonen and Alonso all racing, you’ll be sure to see some exciting action all through the field.
When?: 27th to 29th August
If you prefer your motorsport action on 2 wheels, then the MotoGP event this August is the race you’re looking for. After last year’s action was cancelled because of the lockdown restrictions, there’s bound to be some pent-up frustration unleashed at Silverstone as the riders drive almost ridiculously fast around the track. Just make sure you bring a brolly – race organisers advise that there is a 31% chance of rain at Silverstone in August. Don’t get caught out!
Where?: All across the UK
When?: June, July, August and September!
If you want to see a bit more motoring action, then the British Touring Car Championship has many events across the summer that will get your pulse-racing. Taking place at iconic race tracks like Brands Hatch, Thruxton, Silverstone and Donington Park, the touring cars races tend to be a lot more competitive than F1. So while you might not get the incredible speed, you’ll get plenty of action. Plus, the ticket prices are a lot more affordable, and with more dates on the calendar, you can find a date that suits you best.

Where?: Skegness Raceway
When?: 10th to 11th July
If you want a trip to the seaside to go with your motorsport fix, then the UK Speedweek at Skegness Raceway is ideal. Combining three different racing events featuring stock cars, there’s lots of metal mayhem for you to enjoy. Ideal for a day out on a family holiday, and if you want to get your little ones in to racing, the bold design of stock cars and the close proximity racing is sure to get them hooked!
On a slightly sadder note, the World Rally Championship won’t be visiting UK this year. A combination of logistical issues and political problems means you won’t be able to risk your life by watching the madmen of the WRC race across the UK countryside. Here’s hoping there’ll be back for 2022!
