BMW 2 Series Convertible – Coming February 2015

BMW announce details of the third model in their 2 Series range. The BMW 2 Series convertible will be available from February next year and will have a price starting from £29,180.

The new BMW 2 Series Convertible will replace the extremely popular 1 Series Convertible, the most successful in its class with 130,000 units sold worldwide. The 2 Series will be available with four different engine sizes, including the M performance variant, the first time a BMW convertible has had this engine option. As well as the different engine sizes, the new car will also provide more fuel economy with an average of 18 per cent better performance.

Details on the new model

The BMW 2 Series Convertible will come with an electronically folding roof, fitted with acoustic insulation to help reduce outside noise. Improvement of the car’s aerodynamics also works to reduce outside noise. The roof can be operated when driving at speeds up to 30 mph, and takes just 20 seconds to fold away into the boot.

The silhouette of the car is in line with the BMW “look”, with the long bonnet and wheelbase combined with a rear biased cabin. The 2 Series Convertible will be a four seater, with a folding rear bench to create more space should you need it.

For the interior, the design motto seems to have been “simpler is better”, with driver focused control positioning, prominently displayed instruments, and a leather steering wheel. The car’s control system is accessed through the BMW iDrive controller and a 6.5inch display.

Better Protection

The BMW 2 Series Convertible has a more rigid body than its predecessors, providing greater protection for driver, passengers and pedestrians. Advanced safety features include multiple airbags (front, side and head), seatbelt force limiters, ISOFIX child seat-attachment points, and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

Tech wise, the 2 Series has a Driving Assistant feature as an option, with camera based Lane Change detectors and Lane Departure warning systems. Attention assistant can warn a drowsy driver, and a Collision Warning system will raise the alarm if the car in front gets too close.

Four engine options

The four different engine options provide a variety of performance and power specs to choose from. The 2.0 litre diesel engine provides 60.1mpg on the manual gearbox, 64.2mpg for the automatic. CO2 emissions have been reduced to reach the EU6 emissions standards.

The most interesting addition is the availability of the M Performance Power unit. A 3 litre, 6 cylinder engine will give the car high revving ability and the performance of a sports car. 0 to 60mph in 5.2 seconds in the manual is impressive. Fuel economy and MPG is affected, but if you are choosing this option, than the power is more important than saving money.

High-tech entertainment

The new convertible comes with a BMW navigation system that updates for free, as well as a DAB digital radio, and BMW Emergency Call feature. Internet connectivity and voice control are available as an option extra, as well as Real Time traffic information and BMW Online Services.
