Audi A4 Saloon

Audi A4 Overview

The A4 has positioned itself as an alternative to both the mainstream Ford Mondeos and Vauxhall Insignias, as well as the more traditional BMW and Mercedes mid price saloon cars. Ideal for a new professional looking for a statement car different to the rest. Available in both petrol and diesel models, it is the latter that proves to be most popular for the better power and MPG it provides.

With a longer wheelbase than previous generations, the Audi A4 reimagined itself for its 2008 generation. Entering the B8 series of the Audi A4, the 2008 model’s increased size meant more space inside, and better distribution of weight, meaning much better stability and road handling. Another facelift in 2012 added some of the best new technology, including LED headlights and a drive select system.

We share a selection of customer reviews of the Audi A4 throughout this blog.

“Gorgeous styling both inside and out. This car is packed with features and its good solid German engineering means this car is a great place to be when on the road.”

Performance

The Audi A4 benefits from some superb technology to increase power and performance. The front suspension provides excellent grip when turning, whilst the steering wheel is light no matter how fast you go. For the best performance, you want the diesel version, with the 3.0 litre diesel engine giving up to 240bhp. The Quattro models come with four wheel drive, given you a little more speed when compared to the standard front wheel drive models. Whilst perhaps not as sporty as the BMW 3 Series, the Audi A4 is still a fun car to drive.

“New 163bhp engine has great acceleration for a diesel and is quiet and smooth, engine has great torque at low revs.”

For the best power option, you want to go for a petrol engine, with the 1.8 litre model giving you 0-60mph in 8 seconds. If you want a diesel, then you should go with the “Ultra” engine modification, giving you 0-62 mph in 8.6 seconds. Manual gearbox is smooth and responsive, with the automatic gearbox available for the less fuel efficient models.

“Smooth, quiet and comfortable. Drive select system allows choice between comfort, dynamic, auto and individual settings makes a real difference on various road types and surfaces, positive handling in every corner.”

Variations

The Audi A4 comes in several different model variations:

Saloon: The Saloon has the most engine options out of all the A4 variations, but its shape means it has less space than the others. Has the most engine options of all the variations.

Avant: The Avant is the estate model of the A4, which provides more space without losing on style or prestige.

Allroad: More rugged than its sister models, the Allroad Quattro is made for offroad driving with plenty of boot space. Available in 2.0 or 3.0 litre models.

The Quattro 4 wheel drive option is available across all three variations.

“The A4 Avant is just one of those cars that you can jump in, cover 600 miles and jump out the other end feeling like you had popped to the shops!

Comfort

The A4 is fitted with Milano leather upholstery as standard, making the seats extremely comfortable to sit in. The styling continues on the steering wheel and gear stick, which also has the leather cover. Some reviewers have noted that the firm suspension can make driving along bumpy or uneven roads a bit uncomfortable. The dashboard layout is clean and easy to use, with paddle shift on the steering wheel for automatic models. The steering wheel positioning can be adjusted for height and reach, allowing you to adjust the driving space to fit you comfortably.

Three rear seats will fit two adults comfortably, a third if they don’t mind a squeeze. Legroom is particularly impressive. For most space you want the Avant estate model. Otherwise the boot space is large enough for a large suitcase, and the rear seats fold down should you want a bit extra space.

The A4 is also fitted with an acoustic windscreen to help reduce outside noise. 3-zone climate control with separate air distribution, so rear passengers can adjust the temperature around them using their own control panel.

“The A4 Avant S-Line has always been a great looking car with it’s legendary ‘big mouth’ front grill and low slung S-Line suspension. The Black Optics package also adds to the visual enhancements with a satin finish grill, roof bars and window surrounds. Some versions are also fitted with the RS4 style twin spoke alloys which give it that classy, performance inspired look. The interior is a wonderful place to be with the full S-line embossed leather seats and a choice of inlays from brushed aluminium through to Carbon Fibre. The S-Line SE model also features Audi`s excellent MMI Sat Nav system.”

Accessories

As you would expect for a car of this marque, the A4 comes with a wide range of accessories to make driving more pleasurable. The Audi sound system package comes with 10 speakers and a 180 watts subwoofer. Latest models are fitted with DAB digital radio, whilst the most advance editions have a Bang & Olufsen high performance sound system. Bluetooth interface allows integration with phone and voice control. A 6.5″ screen displays the multi-media interface, and will automatically store traffic data. The Driver’s Information System provides energy saving tips and will recommend resting options if it detects long periods of driving without a break.

Safety

The Audi A4 was given a 5 star rating from Euro NCAP when assessed back in 2009. It scored well for both adult and child protection, so the car could easily satisfy any weekend family commitments. ISOFIX child seat mountings on front and rear side seats

Safety features include an auto-dimming rear-view mirror to reduce glare when driving, rain and light detection systems for automatic windscreen wipers and headlight activation, rear parking sensors, rear fog lights, rest recommendation system, and an airbag system for driver and front passenger.
